This is an old post but I was just browsing your blog and I wanted to comment on this one. I have no problem tuning out background noises when I am focused on work. I will even sometimes not realize that a person is talking to me when I do that. But what I have a hard time doing is tuning out background noise at a bar for example, in order to focus on a conversation. I am not deaf, but apparently my hearing is not that good (though it is still in an acceptable range) (or so my ENT says).
Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that even people who can hear just fine are not always that good at tuning out background noise. And, not having a clue about what I'm saying but seeing as you haven't have the cochlear implant for that long (in relation to how old you are), maybe things will get better and you will learn to ignore sounds that are irrelevant. Do you know if that will happen?

I know what you mean about wearing the CI at work. Last summer while I was on co-op, I would turn it off sometimes especially while I was focused on something, but if someone came up to talk to me, I would turn it on. It's an idea you could try. :]

yesterday i was sitting in my room and i heard this odd noise that i hadn't noticed before and it was SO loud. it was my roommate's dog scratching herself. and then today in class, i gave my interpreter a puzzled look when i heard something, she said someone was blowing their noise and it was loud! it's cool to notice the different things with the harmony but i get what you mean about how its soooo annoying at the same time lol
