21 Days to Make a Habit: Work Out!

December 27th, 2009. Posted in Weight Loss.

My old skinny photo that I’ll be using for motivation

It’s not too early to make New Year’s Resolutions and start it now instead of waiting for January 1st to begin. Mine is always the same since I never had accomplished mine. This year will be different because I WILL accomplish my goal of losing weight!

I realized I’m not going to lose weight magically and by not losing weight now will only make it more difficult for me later if I continue to gain weight. Believe me… I love working out! It’s just hard to get the motivation to work out and go to the gym. I need to remind myself how awesome I feel after a good work out to encourage me to go to the gym. Eating is the problem for me. I’m really picky when it comes to food. Everyone who knows me will know this is very true.

I was inspired by Tricia to start this with a small goal of eating right & exercising for 21 days straight. She did it after hearing that it takes 21 days to make a habit and fortunately for her it worked! I will work out for 21 days straight from Monday, December 28th to Monday, January 18th. When January 18th comes I won’t give up but I’m not going to worry about that right now since it’s easier to focus on the small goals right now.

Tyler and I did our grocery shopping yesterday and I came across a lot of Lean Cuisine meals I’ve never seen before and bought enough to take to work for lunch this week. I’m anxious and excited to do this! I updated my weight loss page and will be weighing in weekly. Tyler bought me The Biggest Loser game for Wii so I’ll definitely be doing that video too and hoping someday while I’m doing it Bob will come knocking on my door!

Here’s to the beginning of my journey with the amazing support & help from my parents & Tyler who always will go to the gym with me in a heartbeat.

“Stop being a moron and start getting skinny! If you can’t take one more day of self-loathing, your ready to hear the truth: You cannot keep shoveling the same crap into your mouth every day and expect to lose weight.” – Skinny Bitch

Ohh I like this idea. I already plan to start my new year resolution tomorrow after I get my teeth professionally whitened, which is to totally cut back on sodas and coffee, anything that can seriously stain my teeth overtime. It’s also a good way to improve my eating habit since I usually don’t drink diet. I’m gonna go for it and do this 21 days thing too. It’ll probably lead to some withdrawal headaches, horribly cravings/desire, but I know later it’ll get better.

Kudos to you for a neat goal like this! I hope amazing results will be in store for you <3

Haha that quote is awesome!! I’m giong to be trying something similar – I’ve been given an exercise plan that’s supposed to help re-strengthen my back and more evenly distribute my muscle usage and right now, it’s EXCRUCIATING but I’m going to *try* and be diligent and do it every day for at least 21 days. Let me know how the Wii goes – we just got one at Christmas and after a round of golf and bowling my shoulder was shot the next day!! lol I think that means I need to work out more :)

Good luck and I can’t wait to hear how it works out for you!!

Good luck Stephanie! I know you can do it! I’ve lost 33 lbs. in the last 4 months eating healthier and working out every other day. Cliff has also lost 22 pounds just by eating healthier with me and he is down to drinking one soda a day. He switched to iced tea. I use weight watchers online for their healthy recipes and also kraft foods has some too. I still have a lot more to lose but I’m staying motivated. I got a punching bag for xmas which I love and I can take out my aggression on (remember I have a teenager). I will be cheering you on and following your blog :) Hugs, Melissa

LOL how funny, I always repeat that to myself: “It takes 21 days to make or break a habit..”… and then I totally go eat cookies. :/

OK! I want to see you succeed and I’m here to support you. I am not one to beat around the bush; I’m a pretty direct and honest person.
I don’t think Lean Cuisines will help you in the beginning. If you are used to consuming larger amounts of food than what’s in that box (at one sitting) then you are going to struggle in the beginning. You are still going to be hungry and this will lead you to eating more to satiate that hunger.
I’m no expert, but I have studied nutrition and I used to teach myself how to train properly as far as exercising goes.
My suggestion would be to take things like ham sandwiches on wheat bread (add tomatoes, lettuce and cheese for additional protein, dairy and vegetables), some fruit on the side and some kind of vegetable. Have additional fruit in case you are still hungry. Count your calories now and slowly wean yourself from that by lowering your caloric intake day by day. Your body will adjust easier. You still need enough calories(=energy) to help you carry the additional weight. If you are going to be really busy, eat extra carbs in the morning to fuel yourself. They are good as long as you use that energy. Have healthy snack bars, trail mix, fruit, whatever in between meals.
Or, if you have the time and the means, you could have 5 smaller meals a day. This helps keep you fueled and keep you from getting really hungry in between meals. It’s what I do and believe me it feels better. I never feel stuffed or like I could eat a horse before meal times.
These are just suggestions that might help you. Just don’t overwhelm yourself….like you said, take it one day at a time.
