Our First Sofa…Ever!

sofa

Lately I’ve been looking on Craigslist almost every day for good deals. We have absolutely nothing in our dining room & living room. Yesterday I decided to look online searching specifically in the town where we live. I came across this beautiful sofa that was just purchased for $1,000 and was the woman was selling it for $175. I knew I had to get this sofa under my roof so I e-mailed her. A few hours later she e-mailed me saying that 2 other people were going to come and see it and if both of them didn’t want it then it’s ours. She gave me her phone number and said to call at 8:30PM.

We called her and she said it was still available so we went over there. Surprisingly she only lives on the street next to my parents’ house. After only 5 minutes of talking about the sofa and looking at it we decided to buy it from her. Tyler went outside to call my parents since the sofa would only fit in my dad’s truck.

I stayed inside to talk with Katie this woman who was selling the sofa. She explained that she was downsizing because she and her fiance just recently broke up and she couldn’t stay and rent this huge house by herself. She’s a personal trainer and had her own gym inside the house for her private clients. She was just about selling everything in her house. I was tempted but knew we shouldn’t spend anymore money right now since we just bought a sectional couch for our family room.

We’re so excited every time we add something new to the house. It’s an overwhelming feeling of knowing that every small thing is worth it in the long run. We need to pay attention to our front yard since our neighbor told us that the community association has people come all the time and make sure everyone is following the rules. She got fined $50 for an overgrown plant that barely touched the sidewalk. I’m just glad we don’t live in the Country Club where my parents live. They have more rules. They recently got a letter saying they need to add more rocks to their yard because it’s “bald” which is insane!

This weekend we’ll be building a platform bed. I came across Freckles Chick‘s blog about her beautiful bed. I am absolutely in love with how high their bed is and how much room for storage they have under their bed. She told me of this DIY tutorial to create a platform that they did. This is our project for this weekend. I’m so excited because I have no energy in the mornings to pull myself up and out of bed. I’d rather climb down or fall out of bed. My goal for this weekend is: NO INJURIES for both me and Tyler.

A Simple Silhouette Striped Wall

Striped wall – COMPLETED!

There is one long wall on the left side of the living room & dining room when we walk into the house. We wanted to do something with it so we decided to do stripes. I love stripes!

We made a trip down to Home Depot, and thank god we only live 4 miles away! Again, here we were trying to decide on a color together. I hated his choices and he hated mine. Finally we decided on a color. Simple Silhouette by Behr. As for the 2nd color, we asked them to adjust the color to a lighter color.

We decided on 6 stripes and measured them with our new measuring tape. We can now stop borrowing my Dad’s.  To get straight lines on the wall when we applied painting tape, we used a Strait-Line Laser Level from Home Depot.

While we were painting the dark color, my parents came over and freaked out. I had to remind them who’s house it was and that it’s not finished. I teased them and told them to leave and come back tomorrow when it was finished.

And at finally 3AM on Sunday we were finished!

Any ideas what we could put on the wall now?

Our dining room and living room is empty for now until we buy furniture. Tyler and I are looking into making our own dining table – nothing’s set in stone yet as we have other projects we want to focus on first.

I have this love and hate relationship with painting especially when the walls here in Arizona are textured.  This week and weekend’s project is to paint our bedroom… hint: light blue/green.

Amazon Stone

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Finally another project completed! We were indecisive of what color to paint the back wall where the TV is in the living room.  First I tried light yellow and that was ugly, then I tried light ocean blue/green and I really liked the color but it didn’t look good with everything else.

Saturday night we went to Home Depot and Tyler came across this one color that was a purple/grayish color and would not believe me when I told him it was purple. Right before Tyler told the guy what color we wanted, I found this beautiful ‘Amazon Stone’ gray color and we knew that was the color we wanted!

Tyler says he is the worst painter ever and I agree. He kept messing up on the edges and we both knew I was good at it but I didn’t like how stressed out I get while painting the edges. I wish I kept track of how many times Tyler was swearing as he messed up. After all he reminds me of Tim Allen from Home Improvement.

Before:TV

Sunday morning it took us a few hours to get the TV mounted on the wall because we struggled with finding where the studs were located in the wall. We didn’t want the cords to be visible so we cut up a small hole behind the TV and dropped them down to another hole at the bottom.

But there was one small problem – we didn’t want to see the plugs so we found some scraps we had in the garage and painted them the same color.

Now the TV area is completed! Except for decorating which I will do soon.
